On a typical workday, you might find Rex Norris juggling ticket orders, or chatting with patrons. On a typical work night, you’re likely to find him shaking hands with the likes of Lee Ann Womack, Melissa Etheridge, or Victor Wooten before slipping into the audience to listen to the show. That’s because Rex Norris has one of the coolest jobs around: Box Office Manager for the Harvester Performance Center.

The Harvester Performance Center is an indoor, mid-sized music venue in the heart of Rocky Mount with world-class live concerts in all kinds of genres. Past performances include The Beach Boys, Kenny G, Three Dog Night, and The Glenn Miller Orchestra.

We had the chance to interview Rex about his work at the Harvester, his life in Franklin County, and what he thinks makes Franklin County shine.

What part of Franklin County do you live in? How long have you lived there?

I live in the Sontag area with my wife. We’ve been here for about 11 and half years and we love the peaceful environment and natural beauty.

What’s your favorite part about living in Franklin County?

It’s hard to choose because there are so many great things about this place. But if I had to narrow it down, I’d say the beautiful countryside and friendly people.

What’s your favorite place in Franklin County?

Downtown Rocky Mount—without a doubt. It has a ton of unique, local shops and I like the nostalgic downtown feel. I’m lucky I get to work down there every day so it’s easy for me to get out and enjoy.

What’s your go-to conversation starter?

“Have you been to a show at the Harvester?” It sounds cliché to say it, but The Harvester truly brings in world-class talent. The quality is unbelievable and because our space is a midsize venue, you feel up close to the action. I think everyone should go to at least one concert.

Who is the coolest person you have met through The Harvester?

This is a hard one! Let’s start with Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers. Meeting him was a dream-come-true because he’s a personal favorite writer/songwriter of mine.

What advice do you have for finding or meeting new people?

Find something you like and just get out among the folks. There are plenty of opportunities at the Farmer’s Market, Rec Parks, or Living Proof Brewery.
